Ulbong, Rice Storage Basketry Urn: Base (2007.15.0005A)

Stiff, tall cylindrical base of two-part basket/urn; made from plant fibers woven in a simple alternating diagonal pattern with very small spaces between some strands. The object is generally brown in color with a slight reddish tinge. Some dark-colored spots/stains appear throughout. The object’s interior surface has a duller appearance and lacks the red tones of color evident on the exterior. A thick solid band is attached at the object’s bottom defining a sturdy square base (extending slightly beyond the basket’s flat bottom surface) upon which the object can sit steadily when placed on solid ground. The body of the object widens into a bulb shape approximately 2/3 of the way up its height after which it narrows into its lip (with top edge defined by a tight braid). A thick protruding, decorative (?) woven band is positioned just above the basket’s widest point. Two thin braided strips (placed at opposite points) extend vertically up the basket starting at the bottom of its bulbous portion and ending at the upper protruding band. A slightly flexible woven handle is attached to the basket via the aforementioned vertical strips. The handle, which is of a darker brown color than the majority of the basket, is loosely attached allowing for free hinge-like movement.

Stiff, sturdy lid to basket/urn; made from tightly plant fibers woven in a simple alternating diagonal pattern with very small spaces between some strands. The object is short but cylindrical in shape with a circular lower lip and a square-shaped closed top. A single wide wooden band wraps around forming the circular lip and is attached via many evenly spaced groups of three thin parallel plant fibers. A braided band borders the object’s upper surface forming a square with rounded corners. The object is generally brown in color with a slight reddish tinge. Some dark-colored spots/stains appear throughout. The object’s interior surface has a duller appearance and lacks the red tones of color evident on the exterior.
