Hanging Basket with Chain Handle (2007.15.0001)
24.4 x 21.4 x 15.9 cm (210 g)
A cylindrically shaped stiff/sturdy woven plant fiber basket with a chain-link handle attached at the rim. The object has a dark brown colored finish, yet coloration is worn and/or scratched away in parts revealing light colored undertones. Generally, the interior surface is slightly lighter in coloration than the exterior surface. The basket’s body is composed of horizontally placed bands of stiff plant fibers interwoven with alternating diagonal plant fibers creating an “X”-based design. Fibers are spaced apart leaving small gaps throughout the piece. Two identical tightly woven loops are attached across from one another on the rim (and rise slightly above it). A long, flexible chain-link handle is attached to these loops. Stiff, oval shaped chain rings are made from tightly braided plant fibers. A short hallow foot extends from the basket’s bottom allowing the object to sit flat and steady on an even surface.

Kupit, Envelope Basketry Shoulder Purse for Food or Luggage (2007.15.0003)
28.3 x 19.9 x 11.4 cm (234 g)
A light brown, bulbous, woven basket with the lid attached to the basket by a light tan colored, braided rope. The basket lid has a dark brown braided border at the base, connected to a lighter brown body with different woven patterns throughout, using much thinner wicker than the braided rope. The top of the lid has another dark brown braided border, around a thin section of the lighter brown wicker, and resembles the top of a purse without a zipper. There are two wicker loops at the top of the lid where the braided rope passes through, and a small hole on the bottom of the basket as well. The basket itself fits inside the lid, sliding out underneath the braided dark brown border. The base of the basket is raised, with a light brown, thin wood foot. The body of the basket is constructed the same as the lid, with lighter brown, small, woven wicker in different patterns. The opening of the basket curves inward.

Pasiking, Thin Basketry Backpack (2007.15.0004)
38.5 x 28.4 x 9.6 cm (253 g)
A tall, thin, tightly woven plant fiber backpack with a triangularly pointed top edge and trim running along its height on both sides. Aside from the pointed top, the object has a general rectangular/boxed shape with a substantially longer length than width. The object’s body is medium brown in color while the majority of the trim is light brown. The trim consists of a tightly woven border along the diagonal top edges and transitions to dark brown solid wooden sticks extending to the object’s base (secured by several “X”s of additional light brown fibers). Light brown woven trim detailing also appears around a thin pointed slit positioned near the top of the object on one side (shaped similarly to a wide upside down “V”). Positioned around the object’s bottom is a thick, sturdy band of light brown wood/fiber upon which the object can sit steadily on a flat surface (band extends slightly further than bottom of basket body). A stiff, tightly woven loop extends upward at the object’s upper tip to which two smooth, thick, tightly woven straps are attached. The opposite ends of the straps extend to the object’s base along its sides (one strap to each side). The lower strap ends transition to different plant fiber material which exhibits fraying and of a thinner weave. A small detail is drawn/painted (?) in the lower left corner on the front surface of the object (same side where slit opening appears; symbol is drawn on aforementioned wide base band). The detail resembles a “#” shape, though each line appears doubled and curved outward away from the open central square.

The object is generally brown in color with a slight reddish tinge. Some dark-colored spots/stains appear throughout. The object’s interior surface has a duller appearance and lacks the red tones of color evident on the exterior. A thick solid band is attached at the object’s bottom defining a sturdy square base (extending slightly beyond the basket’s flat bottom surface) upon which the object can sit steadily when placed on solid ground. The body of the object widens into a bulb shape approximately 2/3 of the way up its height after which it narrows into its lip (with top edge defined by a tight braid). A thick protruding, decorative (?) woven band is positioned just above the basket’s widest point. Two thin braided strips (placed at opposite points) extend vertically up the basket starting at the bottom of its bulbous portion and ending at the upper protruding band. A slightly flexible woven handle is attached to the basket via the aforementioned vertical strips. The handle, which is of a darker brown color than the majority of the basket, is loosely attached allowing for free hinge-like movement.

There are two flat bands that run the perimeter of the object at its base. The smaller of the two bands is affixed to the top of the larger band. They are lashed onto the bottom of the object with dark strips. Above this base there is a decorative, braided detail that appears to cover the join of the base bands to the body of the purse. Body of purse: The body of the purse is made up of simple, alternating panels of horizontal zig zags and vertical zig zags. The pattern continues all around the bag. The bottom of the bag has a decorative, horizontally aligned weave of dark pieces pointing to the right. The top of the bag has a single decorative band of a yellowy-blond colored reed. The rim is made of four branches: two thick branches located on top of the wickerwork’s edge, and two thinner branches on either side of the edge. The thinner branches secure the wickerwork and keep it together, while the two thick branches act as a rim to make the bowl deeper. Small, flat pieces of wood are tied around the branches to attached them to the wickerwork. The top branch has holes cut in it so that the small flat pieces of wood can go through it instead of over it. The wickerwork is slightly worn with dirt or some residue on parts of it. Some of the branches are split.

On one side is says, “ #10 Brennerol.” The object has a shallow bottom made from tightly woven, flat strips. They are woven together tightly and in a geometric pattern. There are 2 large pieces of coil that make up the sides of the object, they are lashed to the matte with smaller pieces of perhaps cane. There are two smaller coils as well, both appear to serve as decoration as they do not appear to supply any sort of stability. One coil is located on the inside of the object, next to the matte. The other is located on the outside of the object and is lashed onto the object with one long, continuous pieces of lashing that is knotted decoratively at even intervals. There is a loop at the ‘top’ of the piece that is comprised of a smaller piece of perhaps cane, that has then been wrapped with another piece of cane all the way around it to cover it. Condition: There is some dark spotting on the inside on the matte, especially near the sides. On the back or bottom of the object there are areas of discoloration. Winnowing Basket (2007.15.0014)
26.5 x 18 x 9.6 cm (225 g)
A circular wickerwork basket, with a tall rim and base. The wickerwork is slightly dirty and forms a shallow bowl by itself. A tall, flat piece of wood has been bent into a circle and placed on the inside lip of the bowl to make it deeper. This piece of wood is fastened to the wickerwork by strips of wicker. There is another, smaller piece of wood that has been bent to fit the outside lip of the wickerwork and is held in place by wicker strips. This strip of wood adds strength to the wickerwork and helps secure the rim to the rest of the bowl. The base of the bowl is another tall, flat piece of wicker that is very similar to the rim. It has been bent into a circle and is fastened to the wickerwork in four places by wicker strips.

Square Basketry Box with Lid (2007.15.0015A)
23.8 x 16.4 x 8.6 cm (218 g)
A square wickerwork basket with a thick rim and base, all stained dark brown. The wickerwork makes a square, flat bottom, and slopes up on all four sides towards the rim. The rim is made of two pieces of flat wood that have been bent into squares to fit the wickerwork. The smaller of the two pieces is located on the inside of the top edge of the wickerwork, and allows the larger piece to sit inside the wickerwork along a flat edge. Both pieces of wood are fastened to the wickerwork with strips of wicker . The base is made of four round pieces of wood on each side of the wickerwork base, surrounded by a large flat piece of wood, bent into a square like the rim. The four round pieces help add tension to the many strips of wicker that secure the large piece of wood to the base.

Woven Rush Raincoat (2007.15.0016)
83.1 x 68.8 x 67.8 cm ( g)
A raincoat, woven out of coarse rope and wood fibers. The inside of the coat is a net, woven out of rope. It is either meant for a small person, or to only extend just past the waist. The netting provides no sleeves, but the fibers do provide small ones. There is no obvious way to fasten the coat shut. The rope net seems to be more worn out towards the top of the coat since it is lighter in color there. The bunches of wood fibers are looped around the rope net, so that no rough ends of the fibers poke out inside the coat. These fibers are only fastened to the ropes that slant down and to the left, if the coat is viewed from the front. Enough of the fibers have been tied onto the coat so that is water resistant. Two ropes run along the outside of the neckline, and slightly below it, keeping the fibers pointing away from the neck, and may have originally extended all the way down the coat. There is another rope that runs just below the bottom edge of the coat, on the inside of the fibers. It appears to keep the fiber from spreading out to much on the bottom. The coat seems to be in good condition, with only a few strands of rope being loose.

Large Basketry Backpack with Lid (2007.15.0017A)
48 x 33 x 27 cm (1560 g)
Large, woven, rectangular basket with woven shoulder straps. The basket tapers toward the bottom. The pattern of the weave resembles a zigzag. The base of the basket is wooden and hallow with a rectangular board running along the center of the woven base. The basket is lined with thick reeds along the rim, corners, the center of the two smaller sides and the center of the side opposite the straps. The reed is attached to the woven and wooden portions by rings of thin reeds along its length. The thick, woven shoulder straps are attached to the basket by two braided cords. Each end of the strap has a loop for the cord. At the bottom, the cord is looped through two holes in the wooden base of the basket. There are two knots on either side of the cord inside the base and loops at the ends of the cord, attached to the straps. Along the top, the cord is tied into a continuous loop. This loop runs underneath the reed borders, over the straps. The portion that is attached to the straps extends over the lid of the basket.

There is also a reed bisecting the top of the lid horizontally. These thick reeds are attached to the basket by thin, interconnected reeds. They loop around the thick reeds at regular intervals with the knots and connecting sections visible on the outside.

Burden Basket (2007.15.0018)
74 x 40.5 x 40 cm (2505 g)
Tall, dark, woven basket with narrow base and wide opening. The basket is nearly black on the exterior and a dark brown on the interior. It stands on four legs, about 10 centimeters in length. The base is rectangular. The top has a wider, practically square opening so the sides of the top portion slope up and out. There are four short projections in the top corners as well as a thick reed rim that is attached to the projections. There are about 5 centimeters between the woven body and the reed rim. On each side, there are two woven extensions, looping around the reed and attaching to the basket body. The weave pattern varies. The bottom of the base has a thick, zigzag like pattern. The majority of the body has a grid-like, tight pattern. About four inches from the top and bottom, the pattern has a wavelike appearance, with the reeds in a nearly horizontal arrangement.
