Basic Information

Artifact Identification Burden Basket (2007.15.0018)
Classification Distribution and Transportation Artifacts : Container : Basket, Burden
Visual Description Tall, dark, woven basket with narrow base and wide opening. The basket is nearly black on the exterior and a dark brown on the interior. It stands on four legs, about 10 centimeters in length. The base is rectangular. The top has a wider, practically square opening so the sides of the top portion slope up and out. There are four short projections in the top corners as well as a thick reed rim that is attached to the projections. There are about 5 centimeters between the woven body and the reed rim. On each side, there are two woven extensions, looping around the reed and attaching to the basket body. The weave pattern varies. The bottom of the base has a thick, zigzag like pattern. The majority of the body has a grid-like, tight pattern. About four inches from the top and bottom, the pattern has a wavelike appearance, with the reeds in a nearly horizontal arrangement.
