Artifact Identification Carving: Double Maternity Figure (2000.13.0007)

Visual Description Brown maternity figure made of wood and metal. Base of figure is a stool with three curved legs. The central figure is seated on the stool, she is holding a child on her legs with her right hand holding the child's hands, and the left hand is placed on the back of the child's head. There are finger details on mother and child. There are toe details on the child. The mother's feet terminate and no toes are present. There is a second child in a pack on the mother's back. There is a metal strip across the mother's forehead. There are circular metal earrings in both ears; the holes in the ears are large, allowing the earrings to move. There is a metal fringed necklace around the mother's neck. There are small metal pieces like staples at the back of the necklace appearing to hold the necklace in place. There is a great deal of detail on the ears of all three of the human figures. There is a metal peg at the base of the mother's right foot.

Scholarly Notes May be Kamba or Akamba. Akamba are located near Lake Tanganyika. - Richard J. Faletti, 8/16/2000 Assigned Late 19th to Early 20th c. based on info that this piece is in the same hand of a piece dated circa 1913. See Comparanda and appraisal. J. White, 2/14/02.
Comparanda There is a piece by the same hand in the collection of Joseph Herman of London illustrated in Fagg, Miniature Wood Carvings of Africa, which is dated circa 1913 CE. - per Richard J. Faletti, 8/16/2000
