Scholarly Notes 3/7/2008: "COLONIALISM: European explorers first made direct contact with the coastal West African nations in the fifteenth century. Quickly learning that the empires and nations in the fifteenth century. Quickly learning that the empires and nations they met were too powerful to conquer by force, Europeans turned to trade. However, by the end of the nineteenth century, Europe had begun the partitioning of the African continent into colonized states. African governments were destroyed, the people labored for Europeans, and the wealth of the nations was taken to Europe. (10) This map shows an early European view of Africa. 1853 90.13.61.
