Artifact Identification Bété Face Mask (1990.10.0033)

Visual Description Carved wooden face mask with bulbous projecting forehead, small slit rectangular eye holes, broad projecting nose and mouth with four curving, carved wooden elements attached at the side of the mask with iron nails and shielding the face. The four curving elements are incised down the center and the incision filled with a line of white paint; the remainder of the surface is stained dark brown. The nose is incised to indicate nostrils; the mouth slit and inserted with yellow and green cotton textile and two iron teeth painted white. Small rectangular perforations line the edge of the mask. Two circular perforations on either side are threaded with a brown cotton rope loop on the right and a brown raffia loop on the left. The surface of the mask has been pierced many times, some nails remain holding bits of residual animal hair.
