| Scholarly Notes | 4/10/2006: "Chiurazzi & DeAuplis Pompeii and Herculaneum Reproduction Collection Chiurazzi & DeAuplis of Naples produced accurate reproductions to respond to 18th- and 19th-century fervor for collecting classical antiquities. Following the exciting discovery of the lost cities of Herculaneum and Pompeii in 1738 and 1748, thousands flocked to see these archaeological sites. As interest grew, Chiurazzi & DeAuplis responded by producing faithful bronze and plaster casts of originals from Naples Museum originals for tourists, home decorators, collectors, and museums. Although not intended for sale as forgeries, the quality of the reproductions has been known in the past to mislead collectors. The Spurlock Museum's collection, purchased in 1916, includes 41 artifacts. A Roman gladiator helmet, money chest, survey tools, and musical instruments are among some of the Chiurazzi Collection currently on view in the Museum's Ancient Mediterranean Gallery.
