American Indian Storyteller
Saturday, February 11th

Winter Tales
Concert for the Public
Knight Auditorium, 2 pm

Workshop for Educators
Rowe Learning Center, 9 am

The Spurlock Museum is pleased to present storyteller and educator Dovie Thomason of the Kiowa Apache and Lakota Nations in this year’s Winter Tales concert, an annual celebration of Native American cultures. Join us on Saturday as Dovie’s “word-weavings” of ancient tales and personal memories bring the wisdom, humor, and history of her heritage to the stage.

  Dovie Thomason

The product of a “mixed background”—rural Texas and urban Chicago, oral traditions and the Internet, the teachings of elders and university classrooms—Dovie has shared her stories with audiences throughout North America and across Europe. She has performed on reservations and in Indian Centers, at the Grand Opening of the National Museum of the American Indian, at Wolf Trap and the Kennedy Center, at the National Storytelling Festival, and on the stage of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. Ms. Thomason has received national and international recognition for her work as a writer, a teller, and an educator. In 2002, she was named Traditional Storyteller of the Year by the Wordcraft Circle of Native Writers. With support from Arts International, she traveled in Celtic countries, building relationships with members of Traveling Communities and documenting shared experiences related to cultural survival. In 2004, she received a JustStories Fellowship to support her creation of an original story about the Indian Residential Schools and the conflicted legacy of America’s policy of assimilation for indigenous peoples. Her work is published in Oyate Press anthologies, including the 2005 release, A Broken Flute.

Please call the Museum at 333-2360 to reserve concert tickets. Admission is $5 and tickets are required. For information on the Educator’s Workshop, Exploring the Landscape of Stories: Your Voice and Your Vision, contact Kim Sheahan at 244-3355. Participation is $30 and pre-registration is required.
