Korean Dollmaking Demonstration

January 04th, 2004

On November 15th, the Spurlock Museum celebrated the opening of the “Korean Dolls: A Celebration of Life” exhibit by hosting a Korean doll making presentation. Artisan Soon Oak Kim and her daughter Hee Jung demonstrated the doll making process. A mesmerized assembly listened as Mrs. Kim explained such details as what kind of paper to use, how to make the glue, the history of doll making, and much more.

The Korean dolls will be on display until March 31st, 2004, in the Museum’s lobby exhibit. To learn more about Korean dolls at the Museum, please visit

Audience members get a closer look at the doll making process.

From wire frame, the dolls begin to take form, as shown in this staged progression.

Hee Jung helps to hold the doll as Mrs. Kim applies rice paper to the doll's face.
