Archeology Day

July 27th, 2003

The Spurlock Museum hosted Archaeology Day on July 26th, 2003. The day was filled with four activities designed to teach kids about the wonders of archeology. Sarah Wisseman, Museum volunteer and Director of UIUC’s program on Ancient Technologies and Archaeological Materials, led the participants in a discussion of what archeology is all about. Next with Museum Educator Beth Watkins, students explored the difficulties of underwater archeology and played a game about shipwrecks and their artifacts. Helen Burch, another Spurlock volunteer, gave a slide show about different types of gravestones.

Sarah Wisseman answers questions about her past archaeological experiences. Participants were amazed to discover that archeology can be a part of everyday life.

Participants discover that there is more to archaeology than meets the eye.

The kids examined two bags full of garbage to figure out where it came from and who might have thrown the things away.

The students saw how a gravestone can tell you information about the person who is buried there. Education student Marissa Garza led an activity about garbage and how it is important to archaeology today. Finally, participants sorted and examined artifacts from a Native American site near St. Louis to uncover the history of the settlement.
