On January 21, 2003, the Spurlock will open a new exhibit, Trading in the Bronze Age, in the Focus Gallery. This exhibit discusses sea trade among the cultures of the Mediterranean and highlights the archaeological work that has uncovered material evidence for this era of history.

Dr. George F. Bass, a pioneer in the field of underwater archaeology and former president and archaeological director of the Institute of Nautical Archaeology (INA), is generously providing curatorial support to the Spurlock’s exhibit development team.

Professor Bass has conducted shipwreck excavations and underwater surveys off the Turkish coast since 1960. The excavations of two shipwrecks off the Turkish coast, at Cape Gelidonya and Ulu Burun, have rewritten much of Bronze Age history by providing new insights into subjects as varied as Homeric studies and Egyptology, and the histories of literacy, metallurgy, glass, religion, art, music, metrology, weaponry, seafaring, trade, and international relations at the time of King Tut.
