This Koa Bowl is made from Koa wood, a Hawaiian hard wood. It is a rare, handmade example of a traditional form. It is particularly interesting as it shows signs of wear and was even patched for extended use. 2005.06.0009

Ruth and Ralph Fisher have donated a varied collection of items acquired by Ruth Fisher's mother in the early 1900s. The items are from India, China, Hawaii, and Native American cultures from the Midwest and Northwest Coast region.
 
     

The patterns and materials of these woven baskets suggest that they were made by Northwest Coast artisans. 2005.06.0005


Among Native Americans throughout the United States, items were made from the bark of trees and porcupine quills were used to ornament various artifacts. 2005.06.0007

 

This Chinese robe is typical of everyday wear that would traditionally have been worn by a woman from an upper class family during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911 CE). 2005.06.0002

This Chinese ornament with folk carving may have been used as a bell pull. 2005.06.0008

 

This paisley from India was acquired by the donor’s family between 1908 and 1940 and is characteristic of the paisleys that came into vogue in Europe and America in the 1800’s. Production centers became established in Scotland, England and France that imitated paisleys like this one produced in Kashmir, India. 2005.06.0001

The elaborate carving of figures from Chinese folklore and ornate painting in gold and red on this child's headboard celebrate the joy its original owners had over the good fortune of having a child. 2005.06.0010
